Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 02:00 pm
[info]dwell, posting in [info]lj_maintenance
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Your average paperback book has roughly 200 to 250 words per page. This is a very rough estimate and depends heavily on the publisher, the style of the book, paragraph density and a whole slew of other things.

Still, average of 200 to 250 words per page.

My NaNo is currently just over 17000 words.

Assuming a conservative estimate (small print, large pages, slightly less than double-spaced), that means that, right now, at the beginning of chapter four, my story would cover approximately sixty pages, were it to be published in traditional form.

Whee. ^.^

The song I'm listening to is lining up rather eerily well with the scene I'm writing.

Thank you, bizarrely omniscient iTunes. o.o

Bought salmon pinwheels for dinner. Decided to bake them.

Out of aluminum foil, decided to bake on parchment paper (that wax paper stuff you bake cookies on).

Parchment paper caught fire in stove.

It's a little smokey in here, but I noticed before I set off the fire alarms, thankfully. >.>

Writing musings... Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 09:52 pm
[info]frosttalon
One of my characters is a Count (in the hierarchy of nobility, a Count ranks just underneath a Duke, and is equal to and sometimes synonymous with an Earl).

Years of reading sometimes extremely cliched fantasy has lead me to believe Count = Evil. It's like a count is Europe's version of a vizier. I cannot shake this, despite the fact that my count is one of the good guys. Er. Mostly.

In the continuance of the splattering of semi-random French words in my novel, I'm considering calling him a Comte and changing the two Dukes in the story into Ducs. The only problem with this is that there are also several Barons, and the French word for baron is, well, baron. I worry that that would cause confusion.

Reminder: Anthrocon 2010 DJ Auditions are Open! Deadline is January 1st! Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 11:02 am
[info]simbalion, posting in [info]anthrocon
Hey there DJs! Are you interested in some Stage Time at the Anthrocon 2010 dances? Prepare your audition mixes! Every year, Anthrocon provides many hours of dances, showcasing the talents of some of the best DJs the Furry Fandom has to offer. If you're interested in being a part of this magic, send us your audition mix (details below). All auditions must be received by January 1st! Selection will begin in January.

In order to DJ at Anthrocon, you must submit an audition mix. The best format is MP3, but almost anything will do. If you're not sure if your media is acceptable, e-mail the address below to find out. Most likely we'll be able to work with it.

Please be sure your mix is at least 30 minutes, and at most 90 minutes. When considering DJs, the following items play a part in selection.

- Live mixing skill
- Phrase and beatmatching
- The use of mixing hardware
- Song selection
- Genre (Don't assume we won't play what you mix, take a chance! If it kicks ass I might book you even if we've never had that genre before)
- Attitude
- Experience

Please understand, no single one of these things will determine who gets to DJ and who doesn't. The selection process is a balancing act.

Send all questions and comments to: smblion at anthrocon dot org

A reminder, if you have DJed Anthrocon in recent years an audition mix is not needed, but you MUST e-mail me to notify me of your interest to return in 2010. If you do not e-mail me you will not be booked.

A fun and eventfull weekend Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 11:28 pm
[info]antimon
I had an awesome weekend filled with some new experiences so i wanted to document it.

Went to Seaworld for the first tim in quite a few years & got a chance to hang with my oldest friends, Raspberry Roo (with Chorca & Zell). Had a great time, haven't hung out with Ras in years for ay signifigant length fo time, and never away from a con. It was nice being on her turf, gotting to see her rays and such. Been to the ray pool a few times, but never bothered to feed them there, only tiem i fed the rays was at Discovery Cove. She got us hooked up though and i fed them. it's fun getting your had slurped up by a ray hehe. Saw the new Dolphin show Blue Horizons, it was...differt, mostly high dives and birds then dolphin stuff, very artsy, taking all the fun of the prior key west theemd show away. We were rewarded by the apearence of their false killer whale though, the big black dolphin, aparent;y due to her age she doesn't do many shows any more, often just one day if even that. Last time I was at Seaworld they still had both, but lsot one a bit back. Beautiful critters. Ate a wonderful meal at sharks underwater grill, awesome food and atmosphere there, the discount certainly didn't hurt either. Only ate there once before with my father. Highly recomend it. It was really nice getting to connect with Roo again and hope it's going to continue to be a more common occurace.

Rode Manta!!!! While at Seaworld, I got to check out the new aquarium and the connected Roller coaster, Manta. it is Florida's only "Flying" coaster as fr as I know. OMG What a ride!!! we did it twice, oce front row, oce back row, waits were reasonable at 15 & 35 minutes. I love the upside down dive, thats pretty scary. The second time i rode it, I got a vicious leg cramp in my hip oooh that sucked, but still loved the ride.

Went to Mach's house warming party. Aparetly I'm not the only new home buyer, Mach got a new place of his own now, nice big peice of land, decent house, like mine, on the older side, interesting lay out. nice place. Mach, and his room mates Cessa and Onye were as always gracious hosts. Apart from a drink I made that tasted awesome but got all curdled due to the irsh creme, was an awesome night. Sitting & listeing to Simba is always a hilight He is pretty close to me, about 6 miles up the road.

Held my first Ferret!! While at Mach's I got to play with and Hold my first Ferret, Cessna & Onye have 2, their slinky lil things lol, they look so fun to play with adorable critters. really flexible. Seen ferrets, but never got to hold or pet one before. I like :)

unpacked 6 more boxes, including 2 that have been boxed since my LAST move almsot 5 years ao, containing my Full Sail books. It's ice watching the full boxes go down and thigns fall into place, if only temporaily, soem things once unboxed still need further organization, like the books. Going through my old Full Sail books, older Con books, older binders full of CAD drawings or renderings was fun too, nice to trigger plesent memories. I cleaned up my wires on my vanity lights too, tucked them behind the book case sheves. Much nicer :)

Played the tmnt turtles in time game for xbox. It is pretty sweetm,l has much of the spirit of the arcade games with new types of level's and way better graphics, ful 3d and neat attacks, nice upgrade and only 800 points :) Yay Xbox Live Arcade

Recent movies:

Bruno: WTF is this movies problem, this has to be the gayest thing ever like gayer then blades of glory or broke back mountain gay. I was engrossed, entertained and appauled all at the same time lol. It was worth ti for the reactions of peopel to this "character" who thought it was real, or atleast acted like they did especially when he talks to the Rev. to try to turn straight or the martial arts guy. Some chick sued saying this movie shocked her soo bad she is now confined to a wheel chair, ? wow

Bedtime stories: This was a cute movie, kids were well played, I like Richard Attenborough, story is pretty nice and well played out, time well spent

Up: Pixar did it again, I was not expecting anything much from it, silly me, underestimating Pixar again. I couldn't see from the trailer how they were going to make the characters endearing, but they did, Once you understaind their motivatios, it all makes sence, well done Pixar

Surrogets: Interesting movie, more or less what I was expecting, good premese and story arks, had a few surprizes but nothing that came so far out of left feild as to be totally unexpected. I liked it.

G-force: It's cute and has talking anthro Guinea pigs beating stuff up :) What could be more fun, and thats all this is, just a fun movie, nothing special, but a good fun cute watch.

It's weird how a story changes from how you first imagine it.

I'm about to start the fourth chapter, which will contain all the things that I had originally envisioned for the first chapter.

Granted, in the beginning, I was going to have my main character be pregnant, until I realized that her husband (and the only person she's slept with), had been away for nearly a year.

Clearly she is part elephant.

Why is it all other blogs I can put in a custom field of what I am reading but I can't seem to find any on LJ to add that function?
Only slightly interesting thing I have to talk about is all the old books I read that smell like someones basement!

Any ways does anyone have an active comic online that like to link exchange with Loyalty & Liberty?
New website why not add new links eh? ;)

 Yo~

Been to this con before.  Looking for a room.

I take floor space; I personally do not care less.  I'd sleep on the ceiling if I could.

I'm female and I'll room with anyone.  If you're trying to set something up for FWA in the future and looking for a reliable roomate, hit me up.

Your Time: Home for the holidays Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 01:37 pm
[info]fenris_lorsrai
Animal rescues are unevenly distributed around the country. Some areas have more animals than shelter space while others have excess space. Many overcrowded shelters ship highly adoptable animals to other areas of the country. Some breed or exotic rescues ship animals cross-country direct to a forever home.

If you'll be travelling for the holidays this year, considering volunteering to take an animal with you. If you're driving, you may get direct care of the animal.

If you're flying, you may still be able to help. Some rescues use frequent flyer miles to send animals to new homes, but in the US, they can't fly unaccompanied. The rescue MUST have someone sign for them as baggage. So if you volunteer as the fly along, all you have to do is sign for the animals as baggage and the sending and receiving rescues with handle the drop off and pick up. You won't have to manhandle crates or anything.

Call your local rescues and see if any of them have animals they need shipped... or have been approached by another shelter to take animals, but have no way to transport them. Your route may not match up, but you'll never know if you don't ask!

If you have a favorite breed of dog (example: border collies) or are a fan of an exotic pet (example: parrots) they're even more likely to be looking for people to transport an animal crosscountry. Check in with them and you may end up with an animal riding shotgun as you travel for the holidays.

Can you drive a trailer? Don't forget that large animals are often the most difficult to place because most shelters don't have space for a horse or pig. So when one comes into the local pound, they need someone that can drive a trailer to a farm sanctuary. If you know how to drive a trailer, make it clear you can do so!

And it will give you something AWESOME to talk about with your relatives over dinner. Driving 300 miles to Mom's with a border collie riding shotgun or trailering a former race horse to a new farm will probably top any other story at the table.

Four of them were for websites, books and/or programs that teach Chinese.

One was a website for learning how to properly apply makeup.

THE river's tent is broken: the last fingers of leaf
Clutch and sink into the wet bank. The wind
Crosses the brown land, unheard. The nymphs are departed.
Sweet Thames, run softly, till I end my song.
The river bears no empty bottles, sandwich papers,
Silk handkerchiefs, cardboard boxes, cigarette ends
Or other testimony of summer nights. The nymphs are departed.
And their friends, the loitering heirs of city directors;
Departed, have left no addresses.
By the waters of Leman I sat down and wept...
Sweet Thames, run softly till I end my song,
Sweet Thames, run softly, for I speak not loud or long.
But at my back in a cold blast I hear
The rattle of the bones, and chuckle spread from ear to ear.
